Save the Met Broadcasts!

For seventy-four years, the Metropolitan Opera has broadcast live opera performances and concerts from its stage. The Met broadcasts are perhaps the most important classical music institution in the history of the U.S. for entertaining, educating and reaching out to opera lovers and the opera-curious around the world. Millions of listeners have tuned into the Met broadcasts every winter and spring since the first broadcast in 1931. Thousands of artists have been inspired to pursue careers in music as a result of the broadcasts.

In 2004, Chevron-Texaco (formerly Texaco) ended its corporate support of the Met broadcasts. No permanent sponsor as stepped up to take Chevron-Texaco’s place. As a result, the Met may be off the air one day soon. I urge you to consider the following actions:

  1. Contribute to the Save the Met Broadcasts Campaign
  2. Contact your local radio station to let them know how important it is to you that they continue to carry the Met broadcasts. If your local radio station is not-for-profit, make a contribution and let them know you are doing so because they carry the Met broadcasts.

You’re an angel!

(It perhaps goes without saying, but we’ll mention it anyway: there are many companies from which to buy gasoline.)
