National Orchestra of Belgium : End of season without subtlety
29th June, 2008

For its final concert of its season at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the National Orchestra of Belgium was in a beautiful program. Initially announced as soloist Truls M0rk saw was replaced by another high fly concert: Alban Gerhardt in the tube this concert: the concerto for cello Dvorak. Unfortunately, the soloist has suffered a little concerned orchestra conducted without inspiration by Walter Weller surprisingly routine. What was even more surprising that the venerable Viennese maestro has based its reputation on the interpretation of the music of Central Europe. Failure of inspiration or bad planning rehearsals are probably at the root of this disappointing performance. Since the introduction of powerful initial allegro, the head plays too rhythmic fluctuations while dynamic alternate brutality and fadeur. Note that the winds passed completely beside the piece and that the horns, so important, peinaient in terms of consistency and power. Therefore, Alban Gerhardt led his boat with probity, his tone matte rather flatters the ear and his technique is impeccable, but it looks in vain spheres narratives. Warmly welcomed by the public, the artist, paid tribute with humility Truls Mork before embarking on a similar unexpected: a moderato of Rostropovich.

After the break, the musicians set off to conquer a rarity: Symphony No. 5 Glazunov. The ONB and its leader familiar with this piece to have a nice engraved version. Certainly, the phalanx is best maintained by its leader: the discipline of all is assured and the homogeneity of desks more refined than in Dvorak. Although unfortunately, Walter Weller supports too much on the dynamics and fortissimi which causes a certain saturation. The entire symphony was placed under the sign of the brutality. While the symphony No. 5 is a work that needs to be shaken a bit to attract the listener, but this fact should not necessarily synonymous with so many sound effects. Opening this concert, the chief proposed the popular Romanian Dances Bartok. Although characterized, they were the best time interpretation of this concert.
