Folkoperan – a unique opera house
Folkoperan is unique of its kind in Sweden. The unconventional productions, the closeness of the audience to the stage and the intimacy of the auditorium are among its distinctive features. However, its distinctive character goes further than that. Over the years, the titles of Folkoperan’s productions have become household names in Sweden, and internationally Folkoperan is renowned by opera buffs throughout the world for its entertaining, fascinating and even spellbinding productions. Audience appreciation has been a decisive factor in this development. Indeed, it has been a prerequisite for Folkoperan’s very existence. Box office receipts represent over 40%, while most other opera houses finance approximately 90% of their activities by means of grants and subsidies.
With its distinctive character and qualities, Folkoperan has achieved international acclaim. Over the years, its companies have performed at the Edinburgh Festival, the Keiler Festwoche in Jerusalem, Israel, and at BAM in New York with Verdi’s Don Carlos in 1996. In 1998, Folkoperan went on tour to Brighton, Lisbon and Copenhagen with the newly written Swedish opera Marie Antoinette by Daniel Börtz. Folkoperan returned to BAM in New York in 2002 with Carmen, and other invitations are currently being considered. Quite a few well-known singers have started their careers at Folkoperan, and those who have stayed on have been able to develop artistically, appreciating the challenges and opportunities available to them. Today, Folkoperan is Sweden’s most important venue for freelance opera singers and musicians.
Folkoperan produces opera performances, concerts, conferences, seminars and workshops, both at the opera house and at other locations. Between 100-200 performances are given each year. This encompasses 4-5 performances a week from September to April. These productions are seen annually by 50.000-100.000 people. Every other year, the company performs operas for children.
